Fading patterns

Jul 22, 2023

The double click is a pattern that everyone who uses a computer (maybe except for the newest generation) is familiar with. It allows for functionality shift; using the same interaction element for multiple outcomes. The equivalent of it in the physical world, pressing a button twice for a different result, or even pressing two separate buttons at the same time, is still widely used and recognised. Why are we not adapting this in our software anymore?

The only place where the double click persists is in opening files or resizing a window. Why are we letting go of this pattern? Wouldn’t it be useful to have the first click always do a certain thing and the second click another if it happens in a quick manner? Aren’t we now trying to displace this functionality, hence moving the problem? To tooltips, long presses, hovers, modals and confirmations? Have we become afraid of the click?
